Most studding mistakes aren't about brand or quantity. They're about length. Riders order a stud that's a quarter inch too long and end up with tunnel contact, or go too short and wonder why the sled still slides on ice. The stud itself was fine  it just didn't match the track.

The good news is that sizing is not complicated once you know what you're measuring. It comes down to one number: your track's lug height. Everything else follows from it.

Why Stud Length Matters More Than Stud Count

Riders spend a lot of energy debating how many studs to run and comparatively little on how long those studs should be. That's backwards. Stud count adjusts how much traction you have. Stud length determines whether the studs work safely at all.

Get the length wrong in either direction, and you create a real problem:

  • Too long, and the stud protrudes beyond the track the track was designed to accommodate. That risks contact with the tunnel and heat exchanger — the most expensive mistake in studding.

  • Too short and the carbide tip barely clears the lug rubber. It can't reach past the tread to bite into ice, so you've done all the installation work for a fraction of the traction.

A correctly sized stud sits fully seated in the lug with the carbide head standing proud of the tread by a consistent, deliberate amount. That's the whole target. Everything in this guide is about hitting it.

Start Here: Measure Your Lug Height

Lug height is the vertical distance from the base of the track lug  where it meets the track's flat belt surface — to the top of the lug. It is not the total track thickness, nor is it the depth of the tread pattern as advertised in marketing copy.

How to measure it:

  1. Park the sled on a level surface and let the track sit unloaded.

  2. Pick a lug in the area where you intend to stud, at the midpoint of the track width.

  3. Set a ruler or caliper flat against the belt surface at the base of the lug.

  4. Measure straight up to the flat top of the lug. Keep the ruler perpendicular; angling it inflates the reading.

  5. Repeat on two or three other lugs and confirm you get the same number.

Measure the lug, not the paddle tips or any sculpted edge. If your track has lugs of varying height, measure the ones you plan to stud, since that's what the stud has to thread into.

The threads need enough rubber to grip, but the stud should not bottom out against the belt or push through the base of the lug. Because these studs pass through the track, the overall length must account for track thickness, the protrusion you want on the outside, and the hardware on the inside. Longer is not better here — excess length on the inside is exactly what creates tunnel contact risk.

Push-through studs require backer plates. These are not optional. Without them, the stud will eventually pull through the lug under load.

How Much Carbide Protrusion Do You Want?

Protrusion is the part that does the work. The threaded body holds the stud in place; the exposed carbide head is what digs into ice.

More protrusion means more aggressive bite. It also means more exposure, more leverage on the lug, more wear on hard surfaces, and less clearance to the tunnel. Less protrusion is gentler on the track and safer for clearance, but at some point the tip stops reaching past the tread, and the studs stop earning their keep.

The practical target is enough exposed carbide to reach past the tread and penetrate hard ice, without exceeding what your track and tunnel clearance allow. This is why matching thread length to lug height matters: the correct thread length automatically produces the correct protrusion. You're not setting protrusion directly — you're setting it by choosing the right length.

If you ride mostly groomed trails, err toward the conservative side. If you ride hard ice and frozen lakes regularly, you want the bite, but not at the cost of clearance.

Pairing Length With Stud Count

Note that adding studs does not compensate for wrong length. A track full of studs that are too short still won't grip ice. Get length right first, then set count to match how you ride.

Clearance and Track Suitability — Check Before You Order

  • Tunnel protectors must be installed before studding. Studs can contact the tunnel and heat exchanger. This is a requirement, not an upgrade.

  • Confirm your track can be studded. Check thickness and construction. Some tracks, including certain clipped tracks, are not suitable for studs regardless of length.

  • Check tunnel clearance with your chosen length. Longer studs reduce clearance. Verify before installing a full track's worth.

  • Never exceed your measured lug height on screw-in studs to gain more bite.

  • Use a proper track cutter for drilled holes — a TK-11 track cutter produces clean holes. Torn or oversized holes compromise retention regardless of correct stud length.

  • Re-inspect after the first ride. Check seating, look for loose studs, and inspect for any signs of tunnel contact before riding hard.

Check your snowmobile manufacturer's guidance before studding. Some warranties are affected by track modification.

Five Common Sizing Mistakes

  1. Measuring track thickness instead of lug height. These are different numbers, and using the wrong one produces studs that are dramatically oversized.

  2. Rounding up when between sizes. Going longer feels like the safe choice for traction. It isn't the safe choice for clearance.

  3. Confusing thread length with overall length. A 1" thread length and a 1" overall length are not the same product. Confirm which spec you're reading.

  4. Ordering push-through studs without backer plates. The stud will pull through the lug. Budget for plates in the same order.

  5. Copying another rider's setup. Their track, lug height, tunnel clearance, and riding style may all differ from yours. Measure your own sled.
